Van den Hout, Bram

Bram van den Hout is a researcher and data manager at the International Institute of Social History and his fields of interest are slavery, piracy, and violence in the Dutch East Indian Company. Through the VALUE Foundation he also explores the intersection between video games and history. He co-authored the book Testimonies of Enslavement: Sources on Slavery from the Indian Ocean World (2020) and three articles all on slavery and the slave trade within and around the city of Cochin on the Southwest Indian coast, at the time controlled by the Dutch East India Company.

van der Leije, Judith MA (MA)

Judith van der Leije studied Archaeology at the University of Leiden, with Pleistocene zooarchaeology as main focus. After graduating in 2007 she participating in excavations on Paleolithic sites in Austria and the UAE. In 2009 she started working at the commercial excavation company of Leiden: Archol. Since then she conducted numerous excavations in several parts of the Netherlands, mainly focused on prehistoric sites. Since 2017 she works as senior project leader.

Henk van der Velde is head of Archaeology of ADC ArcheoProjecten, a Dutch archaeological firm. He is also director of the ADC-Stichting RoelBrandt and affiliated to several universities in the Netherlands and Belgium. He obtained his PhD at the Free University (Amsterdam) on the Long term history of Pleistocene coversand area in the East of the Netherlands (2011). His research stretches from the later Prehistory until the Early Middle Ages.

Joyce van Dijk studied Prehistory at Leiden University and because she is intrigued by the role of animals in the life of our predecessors she specialized in archaeozoology. She is a Senior KNA Specialist and co-owner at Archeoplan Eco, a research bureau that has been conducting studies of animal bones for over 25 years.

Van Driel, Govert (Dr. )

Govert van Driel (1937-2002) was lecturer in Mesopotamian History and Archaeology at the University of Leiden, and participated in several excavations in Turkey and Syria before continuing the excavations on Jebel Aruda. His main research interest lay in the social and economic history of Mesopotamia, in particular of the Neo-Babylonian period, as documented in contemporary archives. He contributed regularly to the Bulletin of the Sumerian Agriculture Group with articles on agriculture, irrigation and husbandry that combined written sources with archaeological evidence. His study of Mesopotamian prebends, taxation and land use ‘Elusive Silver: in search of a role for a market in an agrarian environment’ was published posthumously in 2002.

Carol van Driel-Murray (1950) obtained her PhD in 1987 at the University of Amsterdam on the subject of Roman Leatherwork. She taught the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces at University of Amsterdam till 2012, and at the Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden University till her retirement in 2015. She has published extensively on Roman military leatherwork, Roman and medieval footwear. Her research interests include gender in material culture, military communities and military equipment. She participated in various excavations in Syria, and has been involved with the Jebel Aruda campaigns and publication from its inception.
